Late congressman's wives, daughter proclaimed winners in Basilan polls


Members of the Akbar family in Basilan have been proclaimed winners at the local elections, after the Basilan Provincial Board of Canvassers completed the transmission of the vote counts.

Al-Qaid Akbar on Friday was proclaimed the new Mayor of Isabela City. His running mate Cherrylyn Santos Akbar, second wife of Congressman Wahab Akbar who died at the 2008 explosion that rocked the Batasang Pambansa, won the post of Vice Mayor.

Jum Akbar, Wahab's first wife and incumbent governor of Basilan was elected congressional representative of Basilan, a post held by Wahab for three terms.

She'll be replacing political ally, Jim Hataman, who won the congressional seat to be vacated by Jum.

Hataman is the brother of ARMM governor Mujiv Hataman.

Jum's daughter, Alfiya Akbar Fernandez won a seat in the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (provincial board).

Wahab's third wife, Nur-in Akbar was proclaimed councilor of Lamitan City last Wednesday.

According to the family, they wish o continue the legacy of Wahab, who was well-loved by the residents of Basilan.  — APG, GMA News
