DA Northern Mindanao pushes for responsible pet ownership
The Department of Agriculture in Northern Mindanao (DA 10) has renewed its campaign for responsible pet ownership citing Republic Act 10631 or the Animal Welfare Act of 1988, the Philippine Information Agency reported.
Regulatory Services Division Veterinarian Jules Maquiling said that pet owners are required to do more than just provide the basic needs of the animals.
Maquiling added that upholding animal rights means that animals or pets should not be exploited while providing animal welfare is giving the animals basic needs such as housing, nutrition, disease prevention and treatment.
He noted that, just like humans, pets also feel stress, discomfort, pain, fear and distress, which can affect their growth and behavior. So, they require their owner's utmost attention.
Under RA 10631, the penalty for maltreatment and neglect of animals range from imprisonment of six months up to two years or fine of P30,000 to P250,000. — BAP, GMA News
