1 dead, 6 injured due to 'Carina'


The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) recorded one died while six persons were injured due to the onslaught of Tropical Storm Carina.

OCD-Mimaropa Region Director Eugene Cabrera said the lone fatality was identified as 43- year old Maria Theresa Lagunday, who drowned when a river bank collapsed in Sitio Anahaw Barangay Pili in San Fernando, Romblon on Saturday afternoon.

Lagunday's companions, namely: Paul John Francisco, 14; Aron Rada, 14; Arnan Ruda, 14; and 28-year old Lito Relox were rescued by volunteers.

"Investigation revealed that the victims were about to cross the Anahaw River when, suddenly, the river bank where they were standing collapsed and they were swept by strong current," he said.

Cabrera said flooding in San Fernando already subsided by Sunday.

Two residents -- Jomar Riano, 38 and Helen Riano, 42 -- of Barangay Taclobo were injured after being hit by lightning. They were immediately given first aid treatment at the nearby rural health unit.

OCD Regional Director Norma Talosig said around 1,931 families or 8.595 persons were displaced in the provinces of Cagayan and Isabela due to the storm.

Talosig added that the displaced families were brought to 15 evacuation centers.

The OCD releasing P1.2 million of worth of assistance to the affected residents.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said more than 140 families were displaced in the provinces of Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte and were brought to 11 evacuation centers. — BAP, GMA News
