Ex-Samar mayor faces graft, malversation raps over failure to remit P1.2-M worth of taxes
A former mayor of a municipality in Samar province is facing graft and malversation charges for his alleged failure to remit to tax collections worth over P1 million to the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).
In a six-page resolution, the Office of the Ombudsman ordered the filing of cases against former San Sebastian mayor Arnold Abalos.
Also charged was former municipal treasurer Virginia Uy.
The two officials were found to have failed to remit to the BIR the municipality’s tax collection for 2008 to 2009, which amounted to P1,272,831,63.
According to the Ombudsman, the failure of Abalos and Uy to remit the municipality’s tax collections “gave rise to the presumption that respondents misappropriated the amount intended for the BIR” since they were both accountable for San Sebastian’s funds. — VVP, GMA News
