Village chief shot dead in Bogo City
Less than two months before the barangay elections, a village chieftain in Bogo City in Cebu province was shot dead by a lone gunman, police said. The victim was identified as Bienvenido Cañete, 43, chief of Cayang village of the said city. Police said Cañete was shot about 4:20 p.m. Tuesday in front of the barangay hall of Cayang, and died instantly after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds in his body. The gunman, who was riding on a motorcycle driven by another man, used a caliber .45 pistol in the attack. They fled after the incident. Investigators recovered from the crime scene seven shells and two slugs of a caliber 45. Initial investigation by the city police indicated that the killing was not related to the October 29 polls because Cañete is no longer running for the same position, said SPO1 Rolando Torquido of the Bogo City Police. Torquido said the motive of the killing could be personal in nature. The National Police had earlier warned of killings of village officials due to the upcoming village and youth polls. - GMANews.TV
