Lawyer shot dead in Bohol

A female lawyer was shot dead by two men riding in tandem on Wednesday afternoon in Tagbilaran City, Bohol province.

Mia Manuelita Cumba Mascariñas-Green, 49, was driving a car with her three young children onboard when the suspects stopped in front of the vehicle at the corner of H. Zamora and J.A. Clarin Streets in Dao District. The men then fired several shots at the vehicle.

The suspects immediately fled the scene and proceeded to the direction of Corella town.

Green was brought to the Holy Name Medical Center but she died a few minutes after. The three children are unharmed.

The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) Bohol Chapter and friends mourn the loss of a dedicated lawyer, the wife of environment conservationist, marine biologist Stuart Green.

"She was a dedicated lawyer and part of our volunteer lawyers network of the Environmental Legal Assistance Center (ELAC). I hope the law enforcement agencies will be able to put the culprits behind bars," Judge Raul Barbarona, 14th Municipal Circuit Trial Court Dauis-Panglao, told GMA News Online.

Green handles cases involving property disputes and criminal cases.

"She is a passionate lawyer who is ready to defend and prosecute cases in court even if it is pro bono," he added.

Barbarona shared the sentiment of one of Green's friends: "Atty Mia, a lover of the poor and the offended, worked for justice when she was still living here on earth, but it seems she was given a crown of thorns. May she gain her eternal reward in Heaven."

An investigation on the incident is being conducted by the Bohol police to determine the motive of the killing and the identity of the suspects. — BAP, GMA News
