3 dead, 36 hurt in Tabuk road crash

Three people were killed and 36 others wounded when the passenger jeep they were riding fell into a cliff in Tabuk City, Kalinga province on Saturday morning.

Quoting a local official, dzBB reported that the passenger jeep (ADA 388) was negotiating a downhill road heading for Tabuk when its transmission gears malfunctioned, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

"Nagkaroon po ng hindi pagkapasok doon sa load gear ng sasakyan niya. 'Yun po yung cause noong aksidente," Inspector Renato Miguel, administration officer of Tabuk City, told dzBB.

"Noong pababa na siya, pinilit niyang ipasok yung kanyang load gear. Pero hindi nakapasok ...," he added.

The jeep lost its balance and flipped over while cruising a downhill road, the officer said.

He identified the fatalities as Irene Mayawyaw, Vandam Mayawyaw and Hero Waksisan.

Some of the wounded passengers were rushed to the Bolanao Provincial Hospital, the others were brought to the Almora General Hospital and to a local clinic.

As of Saturday afternoon, local authorities were still waiting for updates on the conditions of the wounded passengers.

"As of now, hinihintay pa natin yung report noong sa ospital kung kumusta na. Marami naman dito yung hindi grabe," Miguel said. —Marlly Rome C. Bondoc/LBG, GMA News
