Village in Carmen town in Cebu still isolated

A barangay in Carmen, Cebu remained isolated due to landslides caused by heavy rains over the weekend, the town mayor said Monday.

"As of now we're okay. The sun is already out. [Passable na lahat] except for one barangay, hindi pa mapasok Barangay Ipil," Mayor Martin Gerard Villamor said in an interview on News To Go.

Villamor said about 200 households have been affected by the flash floods that hit the town due to rains brought on by Tropical Depression Crising, which had weakened into a low pressure area (LPA).

He said the local government did not implement preemptive evacuations because they were not expecting the severe effects of the weather disturbance. He cited that they did not receive any warning of possible heavy rainfall from the LPA.

"We did not expect na yung four hours of rain na yun would cause heavy flooding. Wala namang warning na nabigay sa amin," Villamor said.

Eight of the nine fatalities from the flash floods in Cebu were recorded in Carmen town. Ten other people have been reported injured.

Villamor said only a few families are staying in evacuation centers.

He said the assessment of the flash floods' total cost of damage in the municipality is still ongoing. —ALG, GMA News
