Classes open in Iligan school sheltering Marawi evacuees

Despite the presence of more than 1,000 evacuees from Marawi City, the Iligan City National School of Fisheries opened its doors to students on Monday for the opening of school year 2017-2018.

According to a report by Saleema Refran on Unang Balita, classes began as scheduled on Monday morning in the said school in Buruan in Iligan City.

More than 1,600 evacuees are staying in the school since clashes are still ongoing between government troops and the Maute group in some barangays in Marawi City.

The Iligan City National School of Fisheries is the only school which became an evacuation center in the city.

Last week, evacuees, including their camp supervisor, were concerned that they will be forced to leave the center once classes start.

However, Iligan City Schools Division Superintendent Randolph Tortola assured them that they can stay in the center until the situation in Marawi City has gone back to normal.

He added that students among the evacuees may continue their studies at the Iligan City National School of Fisheries and in other schools in the city.

The schools will allow the internally displaced persons to enroll and will only require the submission of their report card (Form 137) once the situation in Marawi City has stabilized. —KG, GMA News
