Marawi evacuees get TESDA training in Iligan

Several displaced Marawi City residents have applied for the 15-day skills and livelihood training provided by Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

Trainers were dispatched to evacuation centers in Iligan City to hold seminars for basket making, baking, hair and make-up, massage therapy, table set-up, computer literacy, advanced skills in carpentry and other activities.

A report by GMA News' Steve Dailisan on Balitanghali on Monday said the training will be fast-tracked to allow the evacuees to receive their certification so as to be able to immediately start using their new skills.

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said 3,000 jobs will be made available for the displaced residents as soon as the situation in Marawi City reaches its rehabilitation phase.

The report said the applicants grew tired of relying on relief goods to survive.

TESDA's Director General Guiling "Gene" Mamondiong said the program will also uplift the evacuees' spirits and steer them away from depression.

The government has set aside P20 million for the reconstruction of the besieged city where more than 400,000 residents were forced to escape the ongoing armed conflict between government forces and the pro-ISIS Maute group. —Margaret Claire Layug/KBK/KVD, GMA News
