Suspect in rape-slay of Samal pageant contestant shot dead in escape attempt — police
The suspect in rape-slay of a pageant contestant on Samal Island was killed on Monday by police after an alleged attempt to escape, GMA News' Real Soroche reported on "24 Oras."
Elvin Juna complained of a stomach ache early Monday morning and was brought to the hospital.
On the way to the hospital, Juna was able to remove his handcuffs, and then he tried to grab an officer’s firearm. In his attempt to escape, a second police escort then shot him.
Juna was pronounced dead on arrival because of a gunshot wound in the head by the time they reached the hospital. The police said they tried to save Juna.
The incident took place three days after Juna admitted to killing Kimberly Autida, a 19-year-old Community Development student and was a contestant in last year’s Mutya ng Samal pageant.
Icagos Chief of Police Supt. Noel Asumen said the victim was planning his escape prior to his request for medical attention, saying Juna used a wire to pick the locks of his handcuffs.
The victim’s father said he accepted his son’s passing since the suspect admitted his crimes.
Initial reports from authorities suggested that Autida was raped before she died of internal bleeding from a hard blow to the abdomen.
The victim's mother, Helen, said, "'Yan kasi nahuli niyo.
The Autida family had asked for justice for the killing of Kimberly.
Samal police considers the rap-slay case closed but an investigation will still be conducted by the PNP-Internal Affairs on the two police escorts of the suspect. — Margaret Claire Layug/BAP/KVD, GMA News
