Triathlete dies during Ironman 70.3's swim race in Cebu

A triathlete died during the swim course of Ironman 70.3 in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu on Sunday.

A report on Unang Balita identified the athlete as Eric Nadal Mediovillo, 47, from Laguna province.

Authorities said that Mediovillo could have died after suffering from a heart attack during the 1.9-kilometer swim course.

"The athlete required medical attention during the swim portion of Sunday's race and was properly transported to a nearby hospital where he was treated," the event organizer said in a statement.

Mediovillo was declared dead at the Mactan Doctor's Hospital at past 9 a.m.

"Our condolences go out to the athlete's family and friends, whom we will continue to support," the race organizer said. —ALG, GMA News
