Barangay official shot dead outside home in Negros Occidental

A barangay official was shot dead outside his home in Calatrava, Negros Occidental on Monday night.

Police identified the victim as Efraem Gubat, 71, lupon chairman of Barangay Mina-utok.

Police said armed men who introduced themselves as members of the Philippine Army killed Gubat outside his home.

Investigators said Gubat was about to go to bed when the armed men arrived and asked if they could borrow a kettle.

When the lupon chairman went outside, the armed men shot him.

Police said that according to witnesses, four armed men fired shots at the lupon chairman and three others served as lookout.

Investigators said they are looking at land conflict and the victim's job as lupon chairman as possible motives for the killing. —report from Erwin Nicavera/ALG/KVD, GMA News
