5 killed, 12 hurt in Cavite road crash —police official

Five people were killed and 12 were injured when a passenger jeep crashed into a concrete post in Kawit, Cavite on Wednesday morning.

Kawit Chief Inspector Jeffrey Punzalan told Super Radyo dzBB that crash was a "self-accident" that happened at past 6 a.m. along the Centennial Highway in Kawit.

"Walang ibang involved na sasakyan ... self accident po. Bumangga ito sa poste," Punzalan said.

GMA News Stringer Rossel Calderon reported on News To Go that one of the five passengers killed was identified by police as Christian Talyera, who was taken to the Divine Grace Medical Center.

As the police investigation continues, identities of three other victims at the Kalayaan Public Hospital are still being verified.

Surviving passengers were also taken to the two separate hospitals.

The jeepney driver was identified as Emmanuel Quinson, who remains in critical condition.

Quinson's wife said there was nothing unusual about his husband when he left their home at 5 a.m, roughly an hour before the incident.

Witnesses said he was able to safely drop off passengers at a stoplight shortly before the jeep crashed into the post. — with Margaret Claire Layug/MDM/LBG/KVD, GMA News
