10-year-old boy returns wallet with P18,500 cash
A 10-year-old boy from a poor family in Dagupan City received praise from local police and city officials for showing honesty in turning over to authorities a wallet with P18,500 cash that he found last week. Radio dzRH reported Tuesday that Giovenicio Abarquez, a Grade III student in Dagupan City, will get a scholarship from the local police for his deed. Dagupan City police director Supt. Dionisio Borromeo said Giovenicio narrated he saw the wallet dropped by a man who was texting while trying to board a passenger jeep last week. The boy, who comes from a poor family, tried to call the man's attention but the man did not hear him. His mother Maria said he was looking for empty plastic bottles at the time. Instead of keeping the money, Giovenicio entrusted the money to a Chinese Filipino trader near the area, then reported the matter to police. Borromeo said he has made arrangements with the local Kiwanis Club to subsidize Giovenicio's schooling up to college, under the police's "Kinabukasan Mo Sagot Ko" scholarship program. On the other hand, Borromeo appealed to the owner of the bag to go to their police station to get it. He said the money would go to Giovenicio, the finder, after a certain period. - GMANews.TV
