Pagudpud, Siargao resorts keeping beaches clean amid Boracay mess
Summer may not yet be here but tourists have already started going to the beaches such as Pagudpud in Ilocos Norte to relax.
Pagudpud's white sand beach and clear waters have been drawing singles, couples, barkadas and families for bonding.
This is why beach resorts such as Saud Municipal Beach Park have been doubling their efforts to maintain cleanliness in the area, according to a report on Unang Balita on Tuesday by Victoria Tulad.
In fact, Saud Municipal Beach Park has its own septic tank and conducts water sampling tests monthly.
Cleanup of the beach is also done regularly together with residents.
Tourists are discouraged from bringing food to the shoreline to prevent polluting the waters with garbage, said Juvelyn Montenegro, supervisor of the beach park.
In Siargao, meanwhile, the local government has spearheaded a cleanup drive ever since tourists discovered it as the surfing capital of the Philippines.
However, they admit they lack modern waste disposal facilities.
This is being addressed, local government officials said.
Beach resorts in Pagudpud and Siargao don't want to have a waste disposal problem such as the one Boracay currently has.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources said dark-colored water was seen leaking from a drainage pipe on the island.
Some establishments were using the drainage pipe as water sewage system when it should only be used to hold rain water.
The DENR is checking which establishments are responsible for the problem. —KG, GMA News
