DENR says Coron Bay brimming with human feces bacteria
The famous waters of Coron Bay, a major tourist destination in Palawan, is swarming with a high amount of bacteria found in human feces, according to findings of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
A 24 Oras report on Saturday said that according to the DENR, the levels of fecal and other forms of coliform in Coron Bay have consistently exceeded the safe limit.
The DENR's Mimaropa regional office said this was due to waste water being discharged into the bay directly from hotels and restaurants.
The report added that the waste also comes from informal settlers in the area who have no adequate toilet facilities.
As part of its nationwide clean-up campaign, the DENR said it will relocate informal settlers and remove structures constructed illegally within the three-meter easement zone of the bay.
The agency also bared plans to construct a centralized septage facility for Coron, which has been known to be one of the most beautiful tourist hotspots in the country. —Margaret Claire Layug/ALG, GMA News
