40 scuba divers swim depths of Boracay waters for clean-up drive

Up to 40 scuba divers took part in a clean-up drive to help rehabilitate the waters off the temporary closed Boracay island.

A report on News to Go by Kara David on Tuesday said the clean-up drive was led by diver from the Boracay Association of Scuba Diving Schools.

With sacks in hand, at least 40 divers in full-gear swam the depths of the waters of Boracay to retrieve trash on the ocean floor.

The world-famous tourist destination, famous for its pristine white beaches and clear blue waters, was temporarily closed to tourists last April 26.

The six-month closure was recommended by a government inter-agency after President Rodrigo Duterte called Boracay a "cesspool" in February and demanded a solution to various environmental problems he said were plaguing the island.

The report said the diving school association made a commitment to continue helping out in the island's clean-up. — Margaret Claire Layug/MDM, GMA News
