Slain Tanauan City mayor Halili laid to rest


Slain Tanauan City mayor Antonio Halili was laid to rest on Sunday, less than a week after he was shot dead while attending the city hall's flag-raising ceremony on July 2.

Upon his burial, the mayor war honored with 21-gun salute, Super Radyo dzBB reported.

Earlier, a report by GMA News' Tricia Zafra on Balitanghali said Halili's remains were brought to the St. John the Evangelist Parish around for a the funeral Mass and blessing.

After the funeral Mass, the slain mayor was brought to the Tanauan City Hall for a necrological service and public viewing.

Supporters who attended the burial wore yellow shirts printed with words calling for justice for Halili's death.

Upon arriving at the city hall, Halili's coffin was opened—his wife and daughter Angeline hugged his lifeless body.

Halili was shot dead in broad daylight while attending the city hall's flag raising ceremony.

He was known for parading alleged drug suspects in infamous "walks of shame" which prompted an investigation by the Commission on Human Rights.

Despite his stance against drugs, Halili was among the local officials who was stripped of police power for alleged links to illegal drugs.

Malacanang had vowed justice and thorough police investigation for Halili's slay.

The mayor was the first among four local government officials who were all killed last week.

A day after his death, General Tinio, Nueva Ecija Mayor Ferdinand Bote was also killed in an ambush in Cabanatuan City.

On Saturday, Trece Martires City Vice Mayor Alex Lubigan was killed as well in an ambush. On the same day, Kapatagan, Lanao del Sur municipal councilor Nassif Palawan Bansil was also shot dead in an attack. —Erwin Colcol/LBG, GMA News
