SHOOTING AT ARCHBISHOP'S PALACE

Bishop Palma says he hasn't received any threat

Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma said he has not received any threat to his life, after an armed man who was reportedly looking for him was shot dead at the Archbishop's Palace in Cebu City.

"I never have any threat na natanggap in the last seven years na Bishop ako ng Cebu," Palma said in a report by GMA News' Raffy Tima on News To Go on Wednesday.

The suspect was identified as 41-year-old Jeffrey Cañedo and is said to have been looking for Palma before he was gunned down around 11 a.m. on Tuesday after he allegedly pulled out his gun in front of responding policemen.

Senior Superintendent Royina Garma, director of Cebu City Police, said Cañedo was a "threat."

According to Cañedo's family, he was working as an OFW in Qatar and had been acting differently since he came back to the Philippines.

Police said Cañedo was going through problems with his wife and, according to statements from witnesses, wanted to talk to Palma to ask for guidance.

Palma was in Manila at the time of the incident, which occurred amid the recent killings of priests.

A revolver and a knife were recovered from Cañedo.

"Let us pray for his soul, and let us also pray for peace in general," said Rev. Dennis Villarojo, the auxillary bishop of Cebu, who led the blessing of Cañedo's body. —KBK, GMA News
