Boracay Island remains tranquil a few hours before the formal reopening to visitors

Boracay Island is tranquil with only a few people present along the coastline a few hours into the reopening of the tourist spot to both local and foreign tourists on Friday.

The post of GMA News' Joseph Morong on his social media accounts showed the pristine beach a few minutes after sunrise.

The world-renowned tourism destination was closed for six months after President Rodrigo Duterte called the place a "cesspool."

The entire island underwent a rehabilitation program spearheaded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and local government officials. — BAP, GMA News
