DESPITE RAINY NEW YEAR’S EVE

Flocks of would-be revelers buy firecrackers in Bocaue

Inclement weather has failed to dampen the spirits of would-be revelers from flocking to Bocaue, Bulacan to secure their stash of firecrackers on New Year’s eve.

A report by Marisol Abdurahman on GMA News’ “Balitanghali” said buyers started massing at the Fireworks Capital of the Philippines early Monday morning.

Prices of imported and aerial fireworks doubled this year to as much as P20,000 for the most expensive varieties in the market.

People usually buy the popular varieties of “trompilyo,”  “human candle,” “lusis,” and “sawa.”

Buyers believe that lighting up fireworks and exploding firecrackers to welcome the New Year are an established tradition for Filipino families.

“Taon-taon po ‘yan para mawala po ‘yung malas,” said Kit Spencer.

“Mauubusan na kami mamaya. Mas mahal ngayon. Kapag wala ‘yan ‘di na masaya. Kahit ‘yung mga apo ko, pag may mga ganito ...” noted Yolanda Otaso.

Shops in this town are ensuring that they practice safety precautions in selling fireworks and firecrackers as prescribed by authorities. —Anna Felicia Bajo/VDS, GMA News
