Plane from Taiwan overshoots runway in Kalibo airport

An airplane from Taipei, Taiwan overshot the runway at Kalibo International Airport in Aklan, stalling operations for more than an hour on Wednesday night.

In an interview on Super Radyo dzBB, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines spokesperson Eric Apolonio said that the 122 passengers on board the plane that is operated by Far Eastern Air were all safe.

"Ang ating mga airport po kasi sa probinsya ay isa lang ang runway, so normally pagbaba ng aircraft iikot 'yan patungo doon sa terminal building, nagkaroon ho ng tinatawag na soft spot, na-overextend 'yung isang gulong dun sa grassy area, so for safety reasons hindi pwedeng pilitin dahil baka bumaon," Apolonio said.

Passengers were safely assisted in alighting the plane and were brought to the airport terminal.

The aircraft, on the other hand, has been towed to a remote bay.

Other flights have been delayed because of the incident.

Airport operations went back to normal at around 7:30 p.m., Apolonio said.

An investigation is ongoing but initial assessment of the technical team showed that the aircraft has no damage. —Dona Magsino/JST, GMA News
