Meet Sara Duterte's 67-year-old contender in midterm polls
Reelectionist Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte had a landslide victory in the May 13 elections, but the determination of her 67-year-old contender inspired many netizens.
According to a report by Ian Cruz in GMA's 24 Oras on Thursday, mayoral candidate Jun Marcellones still garnered the support of over 4,000 voters in Davao City despite running as an independent candidate. This number, however, was a far cry from the over 500,000 votes received by the president's daughter.
Marcellones, a resident of Barangay Tibungco in Davao City, has a wife and two children. He makes a living by manning a mini sari-sari store.
He said he was not a nuisance candidate because he really intends to advance some advocacies such as allocating more funds for the poor and the elderly and building a better healthcare facility in the city.
It was his third attempt to secure the mayoral seat.
"Yung mga pulitikong walang kalaban, kailangan may kalaban," Marcellones said.
He, however, said that he will no longer run in the next elections.
There's just one thing that Marcellones asks of his political opponent Sara.
"Dapat sana Sara, mabalik ang aking asawa d'yan sa city accountant office," he said, adding that his wife was a former employee at the city hall who got laid off in 2001.
