Monsoon rains, blocked drains cause floods in Boracay

Floods hit the resort island of Boracay on Tuesday afternoon following rains brought by the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat enhanced by tropical cyclone Falcon.

According to the Malay Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office on Tuesday night, blocked drainage canals caused the floods that rose to as high as three feet.

Malay Municipal Disaster Risk-Reduction and Management Office officer-in-charge Catherine Ong said the floods started to rise at 12 noon and subsided at 5 p.m.

"Ang cause po ng pagbaha ay sa ngayon po kasi ongoing pa rin 'yung rehabilitation... Mayroon pong mga drainage na natatakpan so kailangan pong buksan," Ong told GMA News Online.

Ong said that barangays Balabag and Manocmanoc were affected by floods.

Some schools in mainland Malay were also flooded including Cubay Elementary School, Argao Elementary School, and Caticlan Elementary School.

Minor cases of landslides also occurred along Kabulihan and Nabaoy road.

Classes were cancelled in the town on Tuesday.

No class suspension has been announced in Malay for Wednesday as of posting time. —NB, GMA News
