Video shows medevac plane crashing in Calamba
Video footage provided by the Calamba Public Order and Safety Office showed the exact moment when a medevac plane crashed into a hot spring resort in Barangay Pansol in Laguna on Sunday, according to a report by Jonathan Andal on GMA News' Unang Balita on Monday.
The crash occurred past 3 p.m. and caused the deaths of nine people. Two people on the ground, a mother and her son who are both caretakers of the resort, were hurt and suffered burns.
In the video recorded using a cellphone, the plane could be seen going down fast before disappearing on the ground. A loud sound was heard and thick black smoke was immediately seen rising from the area where the plane went down.
First responders found tree branches and leaves strewn about at the crash site.
"Pagdating din po natin dito, nakita po natin nasusunog 'yung bahay. 'Di naman po siya natumbok ng eroplano. So bale 'yung side doon sa may tagiliran na kung saan binangga niya 'yung pinaka-pader... du'n na nag-collapse 'yung structure," Jeffrey Rodriguez of Calamba City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, said.
Two other resorts were affected.
Based on initial investigation, the 11-seater King Air 350 medevac plane with tail number RPC 2296 came from Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte and was en route to Manila to bring a patient for treatment.
Around 3:10 p.m., the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said they lost radar contact with the said plane.
All people aboard the plane, including the pilot, co-pilot, patient, a doctor, two nurses and others, died.
The injured were identified as John Rey and Malou Roca who were inside the resort when the plane crashed into it.
Relatives of the victims arrived on Sunday night and, overcome with emotion, declined to grant interviews.
Lion Air, the company which owns the medevac plane, said it will pay for the funeral expenses of the fatalities and hospitalization expenses of the injured.
It also pledged to cooperate with authorities in the investigation of the crash.
As of posting time, the cause of the crash has yet to be determined. Authorities are awaiting the arrival of CAAP investigators.
The resort directly affected, Agoho Resort, as well as the adjacent resort, remains cordoned off on Monday morning.

Some parts of the plane were still inside the resort as of Monday.
According to Alex Masiglat, spokesperson of the Calabarzon-Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council and Region IV-A Office of Civil Defense, the plane broke up in pieces while still in the air.
Residents said a wing fell off before the plane crashed.
Parts of the plane were found in Purok Dos, Tres, and Singko. —KG, GMA News
