Davao City condo declared a danger zone but residents sneak back in
Quake-hit Ecoland 4000 residences in southern Philippines’ Davao City was officially declared a danger zone on Friday morning but a number of residents were spotted sneaking back into the damaged property.
Operations were concluded after authorities determined that there were no more signs of life in the area, according to a report by Cedric Castillo on State of the Nation Address with Jessica Soho on Friday.
The five-story building was declared unsafe after it was hit and partially damaged by the magnitude-6.5 earthquake which hit Mindanao on Thursday.
Despite the warning, almost 20 residents returned to the condominium. Due to this, the legal department of the Davao City Government is looking into the possible accountability of the Ecoland's management.
There was no recorded casualty.
Senator Christopher "Bong" Go, a Davao resident, also criticized the condominium's structure.
"Kita niyo naman po mismo yung condominium na yan, yung basement parking niya, ang ninipis ng poste. Paano niya kakayanin buhatin yung apat na floors sa taas-- limang floors," Go said.
GMA News has tried getting a comment from the management of Ecoland, but the property developer has yet to be reached.
At least 60 private establishments were damaged by the two strong quakes which happened in the span of one week.
Meanwhile, relief efforts continue to help the affected residents. — Joahna Lei Casilao/MDM, GMA News
