More than 20,000 families or 84,000 persons were affected by Typhoon Quiel in Regions 1 and 2 and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said on Sunday.

"Mahigit 20,000 pamilya, 84,000 individuals ang apektado ng bagyong #QuielPH sa Regions 1, 2, CAR," DSWD spokesperson Irene Dumlao said in an interview on Dobol B sa News TV aired over GMA News TV.

In Region 2 and CAR, 937 families are staying in 41 evacuation centers, she added.

The DSWD has provided P2 million worth of assistance, Dumlao said.

"Mahigit P2 million na po ang nabigay nating ayuda sa mga naapektuhang pamilya," she said, adding that the assistance to those affected in Cagayan is already sufficient.

Many towns in Cagayan were flooded after heavy rains from Typhoon Quiel and the tail end of a cold front poured over low-lying areas.

Cagayan has been placed under a state of calamity.

Four people have died and one remains missing, Michael Conag, information officer of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) - Region 2, said in an interview on Dobol B sa News TV aired over GMA News TV on Saturday.
