Mag. 5.3 quake hits Davao del Sur days after killer temblor

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck Davao del Sur early Wednesday, less than a week after it was hit by a 6.9-magnitude temblor, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

The quake took place at 4:18 a.m. and was located at 06.42°N, 125.48°E - 028 km S 30° E of Padada. It had a depth of 9 kilometers and was tectonic in origin.

Digos City experienced intensity 5 while General Santos City felt it at intensity 4.

PHIVOLCS said the quake may not cause any damage but residents should expect aftershocks.

Wednesday morning's earthquake occurred as Davao del Sur was recovering from the Dec. 15 tremor that left 7 people dead and 86 injured as of Tuesday. A grocery store collapsed in Padada as a result of the Dec. 15 quake.

The Davao region was shaken by four powerful quakes in October and November, which together killed at least 20 people.

The Philippines sits on the geologically active Pacific "Ring of Fire" and experiences frequent tremors. —KBK, GMA News
