Magnitude 5.4 earthquake jolts Davao Oriental


A magnitude 5.4 earthquake shook the southern Philippine province of Davao Oriental early Monday morning, according PHIVOLCS.

The temblor, which was tectonic in origin and has a depth of 50 kilometers, was located at 06.05°N, 126.31°E - 072 km S 21° east of Governor Generoso. It occurred at 2:58 a.m.

The earthquake was felt at Intensity IV in Governor Generoso; III in Alabel and Malungon, Sarangani; II in Kiamba, Sarangani; General Santos City; Tupi, South Cotabato; and I in Koronadal City.

No damage was expected following the quake, but PHIVOLCS said there could be aftershocks.

The Philippines sits on the geologically active Pacific "Ring of Fire" and experiences frequent tremors.

In December, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake hit Davao del Sur, damaging various structures in Mindanao.

In October, three strong earthquakes rocked the southern Philippine region of Mindanao, killing over 20 people and leaving thousands displaced. —KBK, GMA News
