Children with special needs among Taal evacuees

Some 70 children with special needs were among those who evacuated their homes following the eruption of Taal Volcano in Batangas.

The children are now staying at Chosen Children Village (CCV), an orphanage in Silang, Cavite, according to Josh Flores, a social worker at CCV.

Flores said the children are in good condition even though there is no power in Silang. He said the orphanage is using a generator.

However, Flores said they had to evacuate as they are inside the 17-kilometer danger zone. Also, the ash that accumulated in the compound has yet to be removed and may be detrimental to the health of the children.

The children, on board two buses, were evacuated from the orphanage past midnight Thursday and will be brought to a retreat house in Baguio City.

While some children were excited, some seemed adamant on going to Baguio.

Joining the children were 20 staff members of CCV, bringing along with them mattresses, food, diapers and cooking utensils.

The staff appealed for additional food like pasta, vegetable, meat, eggs, milk, rice, and cooking ingredients like vinegar and soy sauce.

They also appealed for additional mattresses
