6 schools damaged due to Leyte quake

Six schools in Leyte were damaged due to the magnitude 5.5 earthquake that hit the province on Monday, a television report said Tuesday.

Cabul-An Elementary School, Don Mariano Memorial School, San Joaquin Elementary School, Libertad National High School, and Pinamopoan National High School in Capoocan, Leyte sustained partial damages, according to a report of GMA News stringer Robert Dejon on Unang Balita.

The report said a window grill in Pinamopoan National High School was detached while small cracks on the ceiling were also seen. The school is still waiting for the evaluation to be  conducted by the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office to determine if the building can still be used.

In Libertad National High School, small cracks were seen on the ceiling.

Meanwhile, the ceiling in four classrooms in Biliran Science High School collapsed due to the earthquake.

Facility coordinator Voltaire Dagalea said they were surprised the ceiling caved in since the building was constructed just three years ago. Fortunately, there were no classes when it collapsed.

The report said the Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Education, and Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office recommended not using the facility for the meantime. —AOL, GMA News
