Women break the mold in GenSan as brickmakers

In General Santos City, several women are breaking the mold by taking on jobs known to be fit for men.

For these mothers, however, making bricks have become a livelihood that helped their families get by.

From carrying sacks of cement to shoveling wet sand, Jonah Castronuevo and Gemma Camarijan have proven to be the queens of construction in General Santos City.

According to Lei Alviz's Thursday report on 24 Oras, the duo also did not back down from carrying piles of bricks and hollow blocks for deliveries.

Instead of sagging skin, Castronuevo -- though reaching 60 -- sported bulging muscles due to her two-year job in brick making.

Castronuevo became her family's breadwinner after her husband fell in.

Meanwhile, Camarijan has been working on the site for 10 years to provide the needs of her family.

“Nasanay na, malaki na muscle ko. Nasanay na, ten years na sa trabaho. Huwag sayangin ang oras dapat tumulong sila sa asawa," Camarijan said.

"Gayahin nila ako. Magtrabaho sila para makaraoos rin 'yung mga anak nila," Castronuevo said. —Joahna Lei Casilao/LDF, GMA News
