DepEd honors teacher as Cebu marks Teacher’s Day

The Department of Education (DepEd) Cebu honored on Thursday a public elementary school teacher in recognition of his exemplary honesty. Sebastian Niez, Jr., a teacher from Cebu City’s Carreta Elemtary School, received the recognition at the annual Teachers' Day celebration held at the Waterfront Hotel. Schools division superintendent Lorna Rances personally gave the honors to Niez. Niez’s honesty shone when he returned in November around P500,000 worth of cash, checks and mobile phone call cards, which he found in a bag left inside a taxi. The checks were intended for the salaries of teachers in the town of Daan Bantayan in the province of Cebu. DepEd Cebu gave a fitting public recognition for Niez in the hope that the teacher’s honesty would serve as an example for others to emulate, Rances said. - Angelo Pilones, GMANews.TV
