Non-suicide contracts offered to students in Batangas university as part of counseling services

Students at the Batangas State University may opt to sign a so-called non-suicide contract as part of the school's counseling services to get rid of thoughts and activities that would result in harm or death.

According to Bernadette Reyes’ report on “State of the Nation with Jessica Soho,” the contract within the university’s guidance and counseling manual instructs the students when confronted with such thoughts.

“The non-suicide contract is given after behavioral assessment and during counseling sessions. It’s not being forced,  it is not mandatory,” Dr. Lucille Evangelista, director of the Office of Student Affairs and Services, said.

The contract, which the school initiated as early as 2016, ensures the privacy of the students.

“It is not a requirement to avail of the guidance counseling services. So it is just part of the total helping process that we do,” Evangelista said.

Mental Health PH believes the good intentions of the university. However, it said the contract may give a different interpretation to the reader.  Psychologist Riyan Portuguez said school authorities should instead focus on the commitment to treatment.

“Ito ‘yung alternative. Mas mararamdaman ng client na mas may empathy, mas nakaka-empower siya, mas nababawasan ‘yung pakiramdam na napu-puwersa sila kasi hindi siya contract,”  Portuguez said.—Joahna Lei Casilao/LDF, GMA News
