Bulacan trike passenger killed after being hit by drunk SUV driver

A woman tricycle passenger was killed in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan after an allegedly drunk SUV driver plowed into the trike along the Quirino Highway.

According to Emil Sumangil’s report on “24 Oras” on Monday, a dashcam of a passing motorist recorded how the SUV barrel-rolled onto its roof after smashing into the tricycle.

The tricycle, meanwhile, was crashed into with such force that the motorcycle was separated from the sidecar.

Based on the footage, the tricycle driver, Genesis Ancheta, immediately got up to check on his wife Sharon who ended up under the sidecar. She, unfortunately, died on the spot.

“Hindi na kumikilos ‘yong babae. Maski anong gawin noong asawa, wala na,” Marcelino Singian, a barangay tanod, said.

Aside from the tricycle, the SUV driver also hit another car.

According to Singian, the driver, a certain Doren Sapil, 42, escaped but was eventually caught by police.

“Pinagtulungan siyang mahuli eh siguro nakatakas kaya umabot ng Pulinas. Doon naman nahuli dahil ‘yong mobile na ang humabol,” he said.

Authorities, meanwhile, said before the crash, the driver was also involved in a hit-and-run incident.

“Nakasagi siya ng isang nakabisikleta. Siya po ay tumakas,” Barangay San Manuel Captain Gilbert Baptista said.

“Siya po’y lasing. Humaharurot sa kalsada ng Quirino na ‘to. Pinapara siya ng traffic enforcer at ‘yong sinagasaan niya, inatrasan pa hanggang sa nakarating sa lugar na ’to may tricycle naman siyang binangga,” San Jose del Monte Bulacan traffic chief Bobby Esquivel added.

The suspect will face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and multiple physical injuries. — Ma. Angelica Garcia/DVM, GMA News
