Heavy downpours cause flooding, damage in several provinces

Heavy downpours brought by the southwest monsoon or habagat and Tropical Storm Pepito caused flooding and damaged homes and crops in several provinces.

According to Mariz Umali’s “24 Oras” report on Tuesday, waist-deep floodwaters blocked off an entire road in Tagkawayan, Quezon.

In Guinayangan, the heavy rain caused a landslide.

While there had been no evacuations, the provincial disaster management office said it was monitoring the situation.

In Baras, Catanduanes, boulders ran down a cliff during a Monday landslide.

Local authorities managed to clear the roads that were initially made impassable.

In Camarines Sur, there were knee-high floods along several Naga City streets.

While there was no flooding in Cotabato, roads became slippery due to the heavy rain.

The local government advised residents near the river and those living in low-lying areas to prepare for possible flash floods or landslides.

In Maguindanao, the sun has started to shine once again but the deep floods had yet to subside.

Datu Montawal was placed under a state of calamity after 11 barangays were heavily flooded.

“Stagnant pa rin ‘yung tubig dahil sa ‘di makalabas,” Mayor Otho Montawal said.

The inclement weather also damaged farmers’ crops.

In Tawi-Tawi, heavy seas several damaged houses by the shoreline.

In Simunul, 11 people who were out sailing during the height of the storm were rescued. Authorities were still for four more missing passengers.

Pepito was expected to make landfall over the coast of Aurora on Tuesday night, according to PAGASA. — Julia Mari Ornedo/DVM, GMA News
