Army troops recover 4 IEDs in Basilan town


Military troops on Thursday recovered four improvised explosive devices (IED) believed to have been assembled by the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) in Basilan.

In a statement, Lieutenant General Corleto Vinluan Jr., chief of the West Mindanao Command, said the IEDs were found by troops conducting a special operation in Barangay Campug, Al-Barka, Basilan on Thursday morning.

According to Brigadier General Domingo Gobway, commander of the Joint Task Force Basilan, the recovered items include two IEDs filled with ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (ANFO) placed in two 1-kg can containers; one IED filled with ANFO placed in a 900-gram container; one IED filled with ANFO placed in a 500-gram container; one 9-volt battery; one pressure-type switch; one improvised blasting cap; 20 projectiles; three-foot detonating cords;  one 40mm high explosive cartridge; and one 40mm practice grenade round.

“Said IEDs were made by the ASG members under Furuji Indama and were recovered through our intensified intelligence monitoring,” Gobway was quoted in the statement.

The items were brought to  Barangay Calugusan, Lamitan City for the Render Safe Procedure and placed in the custody of the 39th Explosive Ordnance Disposal team for proper disposition.

Vinluan reminded the residents of Basilan to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious person or things in their areas. — Hana Bordey/BM, GMA News
