MDRRMC recommends state of calamity over Sablayan in Occidental Mindoro


The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC) of Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro on Thursday afternoon recommended declaration of a state of calamity over the area.

 

In a resolution, the Sablayan MDRRMC said this would facilitate recovery and rehabilitation of the damage caused by the southwest monsoon or the Habagat that was enhanced by Typhoon Fabian.

Around 4,000 families or almost 21,000 individuals were affected while 900 families were displaced by the weather disturbance.

The MDRRMC said the majority of the barangays in Sablayan experienced flooding which lasted for almost six days, causing extensive damage to agriculture, livelihood, properties, and infrastructure.

“All 22 barangays in the municipality were affected, with a total of the estimated cost of damages to household, properties, agriculture, infrastructure, and lifelines amounted to P782,597,301,” the MDDRMC said.

The agency said the agricultural sector was affected with an estimated amount of P706 million for rice production, P13.8 million for corn production, P1.6 million for poultry and livestock production, and P1.5 for freshwater production.

Meanwhile, damage to government infrastructure was estimated at P59 million.—AOL, GMA News
