Roof-high floods hit parts of Davao City on Monday night

Over 400 families were affected as isolated thunderstorms enhanced by the intertropical convergence zone hit several barangays in Davao City on Monday night.

According to a report on "24 Oras" on Tuesday, only the roofs can be seen as houses were already submerged by the flood.

"Kauuwi lang namin mula sa trabaho tapos biglang bumuwelo 'yong ulan. Mahina tapos biglang lumakas," one of the residents said.

Those living near the river were immediately evacuated.

Authorities said Davao City serves as a catch basin, making it prone to flooding.

"May nakaapekto kasing ITCZ doon sa bahagi ng Mindanao so may mga pagkakataon na matitindi ang thunderstorm, severe thunderstorm ang maihahatid niya," PAGASA weather specialist Joey Figuracion said.

The city's disaster risk reduction and management office have yet to determine the cost of damage.
