Duterte inspects Siargao damage, meets victims of Typhoon Odette

President Rodrigo Duterte and Senator Bong Go on Wednesday visited Siargao days after it was badly hit by Typhoon Odette.

According to Go, Duterte made an aerial inspection of the damage in Siargao, a surfing paradise and one of the best resort islands in the world.

Go said Duterte met with survivors of the typhoon at evacuation centers in Dapa town.

Photos from Go's office showed that the Chief Executive also visited victims who are in need of food, cash and house repairs after they were left homeless in the typhoon.

Duterte and Go also went to meet evacuees in Dapa, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte.

They also saw the destroyed Siargao Island Sports and Tourism Complex, which was newly inaugurated less than two months ago.

At least 19 people in Siargao Island were killed in Odette's devastation while 1,000 domestic tourists were affected in the calamity.

There is also still no electricity on the island but emergency communication systems were already set up.

Duterte had vowed to allocate P10 billion worth of aid, which will be sourced from  the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Fund (NDRRMF), to help the displaced victims of Typhoon Odette.

Like Bohol, Surigao del Norte and the Dinagat Islands, Siargao is expected to be without electricity over Christmas. —NB, GMA News
