Northern Mindanao putting up regional ecology center

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — The regional office of the Environment Management Bureau (EMB) will be setting up an ecology center for Northern Mindanao within the year. It is meant to support the provisions of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act. Sabdullah C. Abubakar, regional director of the EMB, an agency under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, said his office is still looking at possible host sites. He noted that in other regions, such as Central Luzon, warehouse-type ecology centers have been built which could be replicated here. Such centers integrate the segregation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable trash and include limited recycling activities, especially for industrial junk and waste. Hosting the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan corridor, Northern Mindanao has plenty of industrial junk and waste that could be recycled. The center will be a multisectoral project involving regional line agencies of government, business and nongovernmental organizations, as well as the academe. — Geefe P. Alba, BusinessWorld
