An expansive scene of charred debris of houses emerged Sunday morning, a day after a fire that reached the 5th alarm struck a coastal residential area in Cavite City on Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters indicated that Saturday's  fire, of still undetermined origin, broke out at past 2 p.m.  in the city's Barangays 24 and 25.

Some fire victims scoured the area on Sunday morning to salvage some scraps from their houses.

According to the Cavite City Fire Department, initial findings indicate that the fire might have been caused by faulty electrical wiring.

Families affected by the fire are now temporarily being sheltered at the Ladislao Diwa Elementary School in Cavite City.

On Saturday, Cavite City authorities said that the fire reached the 5th alarm shortly after the third alarm was declared at about 3:15 p.m.

Firefighters in Cavite City as well as from Metro Manila responded to the incident, saying that most of the affected houses were made of light materials.

The Bureau of Fire Protection is investigating the extent of the damage and the number of families affected. —with a report from Danny Pata/LBG, GMA News
