Cop, 4 others killed in Calatagan cockpit arena clash –PNP
The Philippine National Police on Monday said a police officer, a civilian and three suspects were killed during a clash at a cockpit arena in Calatagan, Batangas on Saturday.
In a statement, the PNP said the Calatagan Municipal Police Station received information about armed persons roaming around the cockpit arena.
When police responded to the area, the PNP alleged that the suspects opened fire and Patrolman Gregorio Panganiban was shot in the chest.
Police retaliated and suspects Joel Herjas, Rolly Herjas, and Gabriel Bahia were killed.
Panganiban was rushed to hospital but the police officer was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician, the PNP said.
Mayumi Dunaway, 19, a teller in the arena, sustained gunshot wounds and died on Monday, according to Mariz Umali's report on "24 Oras."
A construction worker, 45-year-old Joselito Carlum was also hit by stray bullet and was brought to the hospital.
According to the PNP, the suspects were allegedly targeting Lian town councilor Michael Comaya who is also the administrator of the cockpit arena.
The Calatagan Police has coordinated with the Tagaytay City Forensic Unit which processed the crime scene.
“We express our deepest condolences to the family of Patrolman Panganiban who died while bravely fulfilling his duty. A thorough investigation is underway regarding this case,” PNP chief General Dionardo Carlos said.
“A deeper probe will also determine if this incident has anything to do with the series of reported cases regarding the missing cockfighting enthusiasts. But first, we have to find out the real motive of the suspects why they are targeting the cockpit’s administrator,” he added.
