Sorsogon diocese seeks assistance for residents affected by Bulusan eruption

The Diocese of Sorsogon has posted an appeal to the public to extend assistance to residents affected by the eruption of Bulusan volcano, according to a post on the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) website.

“Beddings, masks, food packs, bottled water are the immediate needs in the evacuation centers plus respiratory meds/interventions,” Caritas Sorsogon director Fr. George Fajardo told Radio Veritas on Monday.

“The immediate danger is inhaling the ash. Hopefully, rain will come so that the ashes in the roofs and roads will be washed away,” he added.

Fajardo said the barangays most affected by the ashfall are located in the towns of Juban and Irosin.

From Alert Level 0, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) raised Alert Level 1 over Bulusan Volcano after a phreatic eruption on Sunday morning that lasted for 17 minutes.

PHIVOLCS Director and Science Undersecretary Renato Solidum Jr. warned households near rivers of possible lahar in case of heavy rains.

Classes were suspended in three schools in Juban, Sorsogon due to ashfall , the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) also announced. -- BAP, GMA News
