Magnitude 5.1 quake jolts Surigao del Norte


A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Surigao del Norte Monday afternoon at 4:07 PM, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported.

According to PHIVOLCS, the epicenter of the quake was located 26 kilometers northeast of the municipality of General Luna, Surigao del Norte. It was tectonic in nature and had a depth of 12 kilometers.

Intensity IV was felt in Del Carmen, General Luna, Pilar, San Isidro, and Socorro, Surigao del Norte.

Intensity III was monitored in Claver, Malimono, Placer, San Benito, San Francisco, Santa Monica, City of Surigao, and Tagana-an, Surigao del Norte.

Intensity II in City of Baybay, Hilongos, City of Tacloban, and Palo, Leyte; Anahawan, Abuyog, City, Hinunangan, Hinundayan, San Francisco, San Juan, San Ricardo, and Silago, Southern Leyte; Alegria, Bacuag, Burgos, Dapa, Gigaquit, and Mainit, Surigao del Norte.

The PHIVOLCS said damage is not expected but aftershocks are likely due to the tremor. -- BAP, GMA News
