China extends sympathies to victims of flooding in Visayas, Mindanao

China on Wednesday expressed sympathies to the victims of recent flash floods in the Philippines and vowed its help.

In a statement, Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian consoled the affected families that they may “find peace and courage” amid difficult times.

"I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to the victims of the recent flash floods that struck the Philippines during this Christmas weekend. My heart also goes out to all the bereaved families, may they find peace and courage amidst this difficult time,” Xilian said in a statement.

He said China is also ready to help the country during these challenging times.

“China will always stand ready to help as a good neighbor, relative and partner to the Philippines in times of trouble like this. We wish all those affected could overcome the grief and hardships, regain their strength, and rebuild their home at the earliest date,” he added.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) said Wednesday that the number of reported fatalities due to flooding caused by rains in some parts of Visayas and Mindanao since the Christmas weekend rose to 25.

In its 6 a.m. report, the NDRRMC said 16 deaths were reported in Northern Mindanao, five in Bicol, two in Eastern Visayas, and two in Zamboanga.

Several areas in Visayas and Mindanao were flooded on Christmas Day on Sunday due to the effects of the shear line, the weather system formed by the meeting between a cold front and a warmer front. — Richa Noriega/BM, GMA Integrated News
