Over 40,000 affected by floods in Western Visayas


More than 40, 000 individuals were affected by floods induced by rains in parts of  Western Visayas.

According to Darylle Marie Sarmiento's "24 Oras" report, the rain has stopped in Barangay Libongcogon, Zarraga, in Iloilo, but the water has not receded.

“Nagtanong-tanong ako para iwas disgrasya, okay naman. Siguro hanggang tuhod (ang tubig),” said Rhyan Sortigosa, a truck driver.

“Hindi kami nakatulog kasi binabantayan namin ang tubig. Sila pinatulog ko sa taas," said a resident, Loria Suante.

Meanwhile, in Dingle, Iloilo crops were destroyed and fences of houses were damaged.

“Grabe ang putik at dumi. Ngayon lang kami nakapaglinis. Inuna namin doon sa taas tapos dito naman," said Mylene Ambo-an, a resident.

In Barangay Tabugon, only the highway separates the houses from the overflowing river. 

Due to the floods, all classes at all levels in some areas in Iloilo have been suspended. Classes in all public and private schools in Bacolod City were also suspended Friday.

Based on the data from Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council - 6, over 10,580 families or 44,052 individuals in Iloilo, Capiz, and Negros Occidental were affected by floods and landslides following the rains caused by the low pressure area and intertropical convergence zone.—Sherylin Untalan/LDF, GMA Integrated News
