‘Incandescent rockfall’ from new lava seen in Mayon

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has posted a video showing lava flowing from the summit of Mount Mayon late Thursday evening.

The video, showing "incandescent rockfall shed from new fluidal lava at the summit of Mayon Volcano" was taken around 9:27 p.m.

"Rockfall debris deposited on the Miisi and Mabinit Gullies as a result can be imaged as glowing lobes of debris by long exposure photography," PHIVOLCS said.

"The signals of rockfall on the Mayon upper slopes have been the only events detected by the Mayon Volcano Network since 4:33 PM today."

Earlier, PHIVOLCS raised the alert level in Mayon Volcano from 2 to 3, signifying "increased tendency towards a hazardous eruption."

PHIVOLCS said the repeated collapse of the volcano's growing summit dome has generated an increasing number and volume of rockfall events since the alert level was raised from 1 to 2 on Monday.

"A total of 267 rockfall events and 2 volcanic earthquakes were recorded from 05 to 08 June, compared to 54 rockfall events from 01 to 04 June 2023," the agency reported. -- BAP, GMA Integrated News
