11 Narvacan homes in danger of being swept away by Goring-swollen river

Eleven homes in Narvacan, Ilocos Sur's Barangay San Pedro and a home in Barangay Nanguneg West were in danger of being swept away by a river swollen by Typhoon Goring, prompting the local government to declare these residences totally damaged.

Several homes had already been swept away on Sunday.

Among the affected homeowners was Rogelio Rendon.

"Hiling namin sa awtoridad na mabigyan kami ng malilipatang lupa na mapagtatayuan ng bagong bahay," said Rendon in GMA Regional TV One North Central Luzon Ivy Hernando's Monday 24 Oras report.

For these affected Barangay San Pedro residents, losing their homes was not a new experience as they used to live by the sea.

Their seaside homes were swept away, so they thought they would be safe in their new residences.

Tragically, the river near their new residences, which would shrink into a narrow creek during summers, had swelled into a river due to several powerful typhoons.

Meanwhile, Goring had affected  5,446 individuals or 1,771 families in 22 Ilocos Sur towns.

“Yung iba nakauwi na pero mayroon pang dalawang barangay na nasa evacuation centers sa ngayon," said Paulina Cabunoc of the Narvacan Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office. "Mayroon tayong 52 families, may 175 individuals.”

Due to the flooding and infrastructure damage  in Narvacan, local officials are studying whether to declare a state of calamity.

In total, 13 homes in Narvacan were totally damaged.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development said that they were ready provide those affected with financial assistance. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
